Say what you need written

Everything here is done in writing, which suits the work: what gets agreed in an email is still there to be checked three drafts later. Written enquiries are answered within two working days.

A geographic address for correspondence and for the service of documents, including a notice of cancellation. It is not an office to call at.

There is no telephone number on this site. Everything worth agreeing about a piece of writing - the subject, the length, the claims it may make, the date - is worth having in writing, and the one call that does happen is the recorded interview, which is arranged once a brief has been agreed.

Five questions and a few optional ones. The form writes the brief out in full, gives it a reference and shows you where the answers point in the price list before you send anything.

Industry * What the business actually does, in the words you would use to another person in the trade.

Who the material is for * The job title, the kind of company, and what they are trying to decide when they arrive.

Material you need * Choose as many as apply. More than one kind points at a month’s allocation rather than single commissions.

Service Pages The page that explains one service to somebody deciding whether to ask about it. Articles The piece that explains part of the subject, for a reader not yet ready to enquire. Case Studies One piece of work, told as it happened, with your customer’s agreement.

Who can be interviewed * The person at your end who actually does the work: their role, and roughly how much of their time you can free up. “Not settled yet” is a real answer and is better than a name that will not hold.

Package you have in mind Optional. What the piece turns out to be decides it in the end.

Needed by Optional. A date, or the week it has to be ready in.

Anything else Subjects already decided on, anything that cannot be written about, approvals your side needs, customers who might agree to a case study.

A brief is not an order

Sending the brief commits you to nothing. It starts a conversation: the subject, the reader and the length are talked through, the interview is arranged, and you get the package, the figure and the date in writing. Nothing is invoiced until you have accepted that in writing, and the turnaround starts once it has been paid and the interview has happened.
